Bioluminosity

Dance Spree is expanding!
Our latest project is Bioluminosity.

Bioluminosity is held in a handicapped-accessible studio located at 20 Dickinson St in Amherst. The program is facilitated by Bonnie “fireUrchin” Lambourn, who also is responsible for putting together the pre-taped deejay playlists for each dance.

What is Bioluminosity?

Originally adapted from Ecstatic Dance, a variation on the freestyle boogie, Bioluminosity is the creation of Bonnie “fireUrchin” Lambourn. It is an integrated process developed from Bonnie’s deep explorations of other conscious movement processes over numerous years. These include Sweat Your Prayers, Ecstatic Dance, Trance Dance, contact improvisation, and Authentic Movement. Also loosely included are elements from yoga, reiki, and qigong.

Bioluminosity is held at the Barn Studio in downtown Amherst, around the corner from Bruno’s Pizza. The studio is fully handicapped-accessible and has smooth wood floors, dimmable lights, and a high-quality sound system. We are invited to move however we choose with an intention to grow, heal, restore, and love. The music is preset and arranged to stimulate each chakra, increasing our potential for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Bioluminosity is a conscious, or mindful, movement form. Within the container, we are more easily able to move, act, and speak using the principles of respect, empathy, and individuality – both outwards, towards the people we are sharing the room with, and inwards, towards ourselves. By engaging these principles in our movement, we initiate the practice of relinquishing judgments that rise and shifting our minds and bodies into new perspectives.

Bioluminosity provides a transformative vehicle for embodied ease, allowing each of us to explore beyond the music and open ourselves to dynamic curiosity. Your exploration vehicle may flow from land to gentle raft to submarine to kayak to rocket ship, with you at the helm – or letting go on a magic carpet ride – for a journey of discovery.

Format

As we arrive and check in, we transition to embodied non-verbal space with warm-up music. We begin with an opening circle in which we acknowledge one another and introduce the practice to new people. Then begins the journey: around 1 hour and 40 minutes long, with the music arranged so that the rhythms, tones, speeds, and patterns can stimulate our chakras and increase our potential for healing. Finally, we conclude with our gratitude circle in which we may choose to share our journey with the group.

Between the two circles, we request that you do not converse unless you have a question for the facilitator or a safety concern. This reduction of frontal cortex chatter helps us shift our focus to being more attentive to within ourselves and our bodies. At both circles, we honor each experience by speaking only for ourselves while sharing and refraining from all interruptions of the sharing of other people.

History

The creation of Bonnie “fireUrchin” Lambourn, Bioluminosity began in 2007 as Magical Metaphysical Mystery Tours, a spinoff from Ecstatic Dance Evolution in Houston, Texas. The next year Bonnie chose to go deeper, refining the process on her own. She offered her “FireUrchin Flow” in Houston and in Western Massachusetts for the next few years.

In 2014, Bonnie, having relocated to Leverett, MA, moved the practice to Amherst and changed the name to Bioluminosity. The Barn Studio is ideal for inward journeys, and Bioluminosity has remained there ever since.

In the Spring of 2017, to help improve attendance, Bioluminosity was adopted by Dance Spree. As a project of Dance Spree, Bioluminosity retains its intentional format and seasoned facilitator in Bonnie fireUrchin, with access to the resources and community respect of Dance Spree. Dance Spree season passes and Second Time Around cards are accepted at Bioluminosity.

fireUrchin's Five Ways to Mindful Loving

1. Attention to the present moment; observing, listening to, and noticing all the
feelings at play in our relationships.

2. Acceptance of ourselves and others just as we are.

3. Appreciation of all our gifts, our limits, our longings, and our poignant
     human predicament.

4. Affection shown through holding and touching in respectful ways.

5. Allowing life and love to be just as they are, with all their ecstasy and
ache, without trying to take control.

“I feel able to surrender and release emotional and physical pain using the process during Bioluminosity's chakra-arranged music, in nonverbal attentive presence. The careful selection of music evokes and awakens all my energy centers, my heart and Spirit connection. I feel a deep love for those musicians capable of spiritually touching the core of my being and nervous system. Much like alchemists dreamed to change lead to gold, evocative music is such that actually offers transformation to us humans. At my deepest dives, I’ve had metaphysical journeys, met medicine guides and animals, broken through shadows of self-doubt, and found answers in dream-like manifestations. More importantly to me, through consistent use, I find it continues to offer release and relief each time I dive in and resurface, recovering my inner light to live better.
